Nurturing Imagination in Children through Play

There are no limits to the human imagination and the possibilities of Imaginative Play. We can dream up infinite ideas, scenarios, characters and narratives, create solutions or unique artworks. Small children’s imaginations can run wild with a constant influx of new information as they discover the world around them and supporting their imaginative adventures will grow their confidence and self esteem as well as have other long term benefits to their overall development.

In this blog, we’ll look at how imaginative play can support many other areas of your little one’s development, and how to bring elements of imaginative play to their playtime.

What Is Imaginative Play?

Imaginative play can refer to any type of game or story that requires the imagination. This could be a teddy bears picnic, with your child creating storylines for their teddies or vocalising both sides of conversations. It could mean creating scenarios with toy characters such as our sturdy Happyland playsets, drawing on their own life experiences to create jobs, voices and stories for each of the characters.

Dressing up and role playing makes imaginative play more immersive, and small children often love playing house, pretending to cook in a play kitchen or going on a galactic adventure by turning your living room into the surface of another planet…

Imaginative play is fun, engaging and allows children to explore and test out new ideas. We looked at some of the long term developmental benefits of encouraging a more imaginative playtime:

Emotional Growth: Expressing emotions through imaginative play gives children a safe space to start to learn to manage their feelings and how they react to situations. Even very young children can use imaginative play to express both positive and negative experiences they have had or seen in others. Imaginative play helps them to develop empathy, emotional intelligence and to understand other’s experiences.

Social Skills: When children play together, it requires a lot of communication, compromise and listening to involve everyone in the group. You may find some children take the lead more than others, but these experiences, whether they seem successful or not, all help children learn to work together, which will help a lot when they start school

Language Development: When children engage in imaginative play, the language they use will often be different to their real-world interactions. This helps to grow their vocabulary improve their communication skills, whether they are interacting with real or imaginary friends!

Physical Development: Activities like dressing up, building forts, or playing pretend games encourage physical coordination and support development of motor skills, balance and hand-eye coordination. Problem-Solving Abilities: Creating their own stories and acting out their own ideas gives them the chance to create their own problems and test solutions. This could be role-playing shops, where children have to work out pricing and give change, or coming up with ways to defeat an imaginary enemy.

Self-Confidence: Raising confidence children means supporting them in trying things out, making mistakes and celebrating solutions. Imaginative play lets them try out new things in a safe environment, experiment with ideas and explore complex ideas, all of which supports the growth of their confidence and self-esteem.

Long-Term Academic Benefits: Research  by the University Of Iowa shows that children who engage in imaginative play tend to perform better academically. The skills they develop through such play—creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence—directly contribute to their success at school

Many children’s toys and games create opportunities for role play. Pretend versions of real-work tools like a doctors medical set, construction tools or a dolls changing bag offer the opportunity for children to step into a role and experience being a doctor, construction worker or parent. Design A Fun World

Become a resident of Happyland, build the city of their dreams or create new stories around familiar characters with their favourite toys, there are infinite possibilities to create new worlds with children’s toys. Your little ones may like to act out the same scenes again and again, or replicate real-world scenarios that they have experienced. If you have outdoor space, your garden offers infinite outdoor adventures, from pirate treasure hunts (make bounty with foil, sweets or small toys in a cardboard chest!) to a dense rainforest. Playhouses and teepees offer immersive new ways to play if you have the budget and space.
